City of Refuge

When someone in Biblical times killed someone else accidentally, why did they go to a City of Refuge?  Why then were they not allowed to leave until the Cohen HaGadol (High Priest) died?  Furthermore, how do the writings of the Talmud help to explain why this situation is prophetic of Yeshua in a way that contradicts many popular Christian interpretations of Numbers 35?
